There's nothing like riding a board you shaped yourself. And, there are no other boards exactly like the one you shape. Shaping is an incredibly fun, rewarding, addictive process--and now, it's easy to learn. In an SYOB course at the Malwitz Custom Surfboards studio in Brooklyn, NYC, you'll get guidance, one-on-one instruction, and all the tools and space you'll need. The SYOB class is the perfect way to learn every step of the shaping process and to walk away with your own unique board, without the guesswork, the mess, or the added expense of tools and studio space.
Each student will leave the class with a custom board they shaped from start to finish and ready for glassing.
Caution: SYOB can result in a life-long shaping addiction. Once you shape one (and ride it), you'll be hooked!

Beginner Shaping - Shaping your first surfboard
Tuition: $550
The student will hand-shape a custom-designed surfboard ready for glassing. 1 Day class. (Approx 6 hours.)
Includes: One-on-one instruction, Stock Blank, Choice of your own, stock, or custom template, all tools, sand papers, mask, and use of shaping bay.
Shaping - Practice makes perfect
Tuition $350
Prerequisite: Beginner Shaping or a proven proficiency of process and tools.
The student will hand-shape a custom-designed surfboard ready for glassing while building upon what he/she learned in Beginner Shaping or from prior shaping experience.
Includes: Stock Blank, Choice of your own, stock, or custom template , All tools, sand papers, mask, and 10 hour use of shaping bay.

Current Stock Blanks:
5'5" to 6'2" Fishes - EPS foam / Basswood Stringer
5'10 to 6'8" Shortboards - EPS foam / Basswood Stringer
* Custom ordered blanks availalbe for extra fee. Approx $150. Ask for details.
* Price adjustment of $85 will be credited if you use your own blank.
Glassing:
Epoxy Glassing - Fine sanded finish, Probox installed or Glassed-on, Fins not included
(Allow up to 4 months to complete)
Clear: $300
Solid Color Paint: $350
* There are local NY/NJ glassers that have a much faster turn around. Ask for details.

Reserve Class
Classes are given on a very limited basis, so sign up quick before they are all booked.
* 5% of all tuition will be donated to the NYC chapter of Surfrider.
* Every student must be 18 years of age or older and must sign a Hold Harmless Agreement prior to class.
* Full tuition payment is required to reserve a class.
* $25 discount for check or cash. Ask for details.
I am far from being a handy man but shaping my own board was always something I wanted to try. Rick was a great mentor, he was patient and very clear about the process. When I had a hard time he showed me the way and by the end of the day I had my first board shaped with a big help from Rick. The board is now an Art piece of mine and I couldn't be happier.

Working with Rick was a great experience. He was calm, patient, and always explained what each step in the shaping process was for. And he always caught me if I were about to make a mistake! It was a really fun day and I am happy that I can now say I shaped my very first board!
